New York City Launches All-inclusive Online Hub for City's Tech Ecosystem
The Big Apple in its usual big bigger biggest fashion is showcasing to the world the exploding tech and startup scene in New York. And at the same time, showing the domain industry exactly how to promote a new TLD. This week, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled Digital.NYC, a website dedicated to serving New York City's technology and startup community. This first-of-its-kind online platform, a unique public/private partnership between the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, IBM, and over a dozen leading NYC-based technology and media companies, will serve as a centralized hub for the City’s tech ecosystem, providing information and resources to help turn ideas into businesses, deliver valuable tools for digital startups, and connect New Yorkers to opportunities in New York City’s tech ecosystem. Digital.NYC offers a pioneering search portal and database with profiles of virtually every city-based tech company and investor; a continuously updated list of tech and digital job openings, a citywide tech event and class calendar; an interactive map of tech companies, startup resources across the boroughs; and additional features that combine to create a comprehensive one-stop shop for everything startup-related in New York City.
“Technology is driving innovation across New York City’s industries – from fashion to finance to manufacturing, making it more necessary than ever for the City’s digital community to have a central platform,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We are proud to launch Digital.NYC, a ground-breaking resource that will seamlessly connect members of the City’s tech hub to training, jobs, and funding and make our city’s digital economy accessible to all New Yorkers.”
The launch of Digital.NYC is a shining example of how a new TLD should and could be used for the betterment of the Internet and its users. Other registries can learn from how intelligent the .NYC registry leveraged their Pioneers Program. One of the key benchmarks of success for a new TLD registry, beyond pure numbers of domain registrations, is actually demonstrating a real world use of the domain name in the marketplace (full-fledge published sites with meaningful content). It looks like Digital.NYC will hit it out of the park with its new platform.
DotNYC (.NYC), a brand new geographic TLD, is set to commence general availability domain registrations on October 8th, 2014. This TLD is anticipated to have great success coming out of the gates based on the early demand in the Sunrise and Landrush phases.
